IF I COULD TEACH ANYTHING ELSE IT WOULD BE..
Could I ever say goodbye to teaching art? Is there a subject that I could feel as passionate about? Where do I think students are going to need the most assistance in the future? Will I be able to enhance my art classroom with my new knowledge? These were just a few of the questions that were running through my mind as I was deciding on what masters program I was going to apply for at MSU. I decided that the Masters in Educational Technology (MAET) program seemed to fit all the criteria.
In 2009 my journey through the MAET program began. Throughout the program, I have been able to create websites, wikis, webquests, and learn how to use technology to enhance all aspects of learning across the curriculum. I have been able to share my technology knowledge to assist other teachers in ways it can be utilized to enhance their classroom. But my classroom has seen the most change.
I have used Jing to create videos of myself drawing, painting, working with clay, and using Photoshop. They have been posted to my classroom websites for students to watch at home and also played during class for students to observe while I am helping other students. I have also put an entire Graphic Design course online. This course allowed students to blog with their peers. They were able to seek help and advice from each other when needed. Having this course online allowed my students to always have a teacher present if they were having difficulties. Students were able to rewind and reread videos and directions as many times as needed without feeling judgment from their peers. Throughout this course, I was able to be a creative director for the students and their work turned out better than ever. My students also participated in several webquests and StAirs. Which resulted in improved competence and knowledge of the subject area.
My goal is to always continue to find ways to become a better educator, stay passionate about what I am teaching, and learn tools that will be an asset to my school district. The MAET program has helped me reach my goals. It has motivated me to change my teaching style, challenge my classes in new ways, and inspire my students to learn how use technology to be a positive resource in their educational experience. I look forward to continuing to use my networks of knowledge to stay on the cutting edge of technology and find ways to enhance my teaching implementing it in my curriculum.
