My toolbox
As my masters program comes to end, I feel a great sense of relief and accomplishment, but also a fear of becoming disconnected. I question whether I will make the time in my busy schedule to research, read, and check my online communities for new technology information. But then I realize, that I am not only finishing my master’s degree with a new diploma but also a new passion in the education field. A passion I feel very strongly about passing onto my students.
I tell my students, “I will give you the tools and you have to use them.” My hope is that when they leave my room they will have learned how to create their own educational opportunities and begin to seek knowledge independently by pulling different tools from their “toolbox.” I strive to instill lateral thinking skills in my students that they can use in all aspects of life. But how will I practice what I preach to my students?
Google, MACUL, Facebook, Twitter, socialbookmarking, are all in my toolbox. When I begin a new project or revamp an old one these networks will be put directly in my tool belt. They will be kept very close and used often. I will utilize these online communities to continue to use technology to help my students learn information in new ways. Ways that will improve their ability to learn.
The tools I have learned during the MAET program have helped me improve and reinvent my teaching strategies. My foundation of technology knowledge have given me the confidence to explore and create new and exiting ways to get my students engaged in the learning process. I look forward to continuing to discover new technology tools to put in my toolbox and exploring new ways the tools can be repurposed for educational use. Maybe next year I will need a bigger toolbox.
